1 .Background
Lake water is one of the major surface water bodies which may
be artificial or natural. Surface water being directly exposed
to the external environment is very prone to contamination by
various natural processes, which has been further aggravated
by the various human activities and the industries directly
as well as indirectly. Phewa is the second largest lake of the
country and become a souvenir of the Pokhara valley. View of
Annapurna and Fishtail Himal are the tourist attractive center.
Since a major natural surface water body, the lake water is
being use for various purposes like washing, cleaning, swimming,
bathing and other recreational activities as well..
2. Introduction:
Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) under the
Phewa Lake Environment Awareness and Capacity Building Project
(PLEACBP) carried out water quality monitoring program in the
Phewa Lake of Pokhara valley. The project is being implemented
under the Pokhara Sub Metropolitan City to improve Phewa Lake
by conservation management through initiatives of local communities
to reduce urban pollution loads to the Lake. The major goal
of the project is to conserve Lake through water quality management
by enabling the local community through activities like supporting
environmental awareness, capacity building and conservation
programs.
Water Quality Monitoring is one of the major, among the others
activities of PLECAB. The present work is the continuation of
Phewa lake water quality monitoring program. The first sampling
was done during the winter season on January 2006; and the present
sampling was on the month of August during the rainy season.
In the present study, some sites are included as per the recommendation
to represent the entire water quality of lake and some important
parameters as well.
Altogether there are eleven different sampling sites in the
Phewa Lake, out of which six are located in the lake shore and
all belong to ward no. 6 Pokhara Sub Metropolitan City. These
sites are Damside, Gaighat, Barahighat, Camping chowk, Seti
Cannel (Siltation Basin) and Gaira Ko Chautara. Where as, other
five sites are located the different parts inside the lake including
middle point of lake.
