Phewa Lake, which attracts a large number of tourists and contributes
significantly to the economy of Pokhara, has been constantly experiencing
the problems of water quality degradation resulting into the growth
of water hyacinth, foul odor due to noxious gases and fish death
during summer. The degradation of Lake Water quality may cause numerous
socio-economic problems. Some possible major problems are: |
-
Inadequate understanding
among the local communities about the socio- economic effects
of Lake pollution.
-
Inadequate involvement
of local communities and agencies in Phewa Lake conservation.
-
Inadequate capacity of
the local people, communities and institutions to conserve Phewa
Lake.
-
Lack of design and implementation
of participatory, behavioral and result- oriented programs to
reduce Lake pollution.
-
Lack of detailed analysis
and monitoring of the environmental situation including present
trend and consequences of Lake pollution.
-
Lack of development of
environmental rules and action management plan in a participatory
way.
|
| The above issues will brings
the following effects: |
-
Decline in the aesthetic beauty of the Lake.
-
Lake water quality will becomes unfit for
swimming and water sports.
-
Foul odor discourages people/tourists to
visit Lake.
-
Increase in the rate of mortality of fish
and other aquatic animals further leading to decline in fishery
development related activities.
-
Decline in income from
tourism and employment in this trade.
-
Decline in the ecosystem
of the Lake and socio-cultural development of the area.
-
Urban decay at Lakeshore
and decline in tourism industry.
|
| The water quality degradation
of Phewa Lake primarily attributes to: |
-
Discharge of domestic,
commercial, and industrial waste water and sewer into the Lake
through Phirke Khola and Seti Canal.
-
Illegal connection of
domestic wastes into the recently constructed storm water drainage
and eventually discharges into the Lake.
-
Seepage and overflow of
septic tanks into the Lake.
-
Direct discharge of toilet
wastes into the Lake by the Lakeshore residents, government
institutions and hotels.
-
Runoff carrying organic
pollution load and solid wastes into the Lake.
-
Laundry washing by hotels
and residents.
-
Pollution from freely
wallowing buffaloes and pigs at the Lakeshore
